The 7.3l Ford managed the climb with a 16,000 lb gooseneck trailer, in 8 minutes 42 seconds. The Chevy equivalent truck with their new 6.6l gas V8 only managed 11 minutes, 50 seconds. That’s a HUGE difference despite the Chevy being only slightly less powerful on paper: 430hp/475 lb ft for the Ford vs 401hp/464 lb ft for the Chevy. The other big variable is the transmission, as Ford’s new Super Duty is equipped with a new 10 speed automatic, whereas the Chevy still makes due with a 6 speed auto. Can the four extra gears really make that much of a difference? Or is the 7.3's power band really that much broader and more accessible?
The Chevy DID win in fuel economy though, it managed 2.4 miles per gallon and the Ford only got 2.2.

what axle ratios did the two have?
and I hope they offer a crate engine package for the 7.3. That would be a perfect retrofit into a ‘70s land barge.

I’m hoping for
20%. Unless you’re towing heavy half the time or more, the gasser will be cheaper over a 200,000 mile service life.

4.30 for the Ford.

I’m setting a lot of videos of people tearing into these and seeing a lot of potential for power.

3.73 for the Chevy, 4.30 for the Ford.

yep, lots gets left on the table in the name of durability/longevity. The 6.7 Powerstroke’s default calibration in the F-650/750 is 270 hp/675 lb-ft.

Yeah it's intentionally under stressed but I guess they were saying there are some easy ways to build one of these to a happy 550 hp na motor

Shit, 600+ should be easy as long as you don’t care about it going 175,000 miles

And it’s got to be substantially cheaper to make than the 6.2 or 6.8.

That is a point that gets missed. Diesels are so complex, and in California at least, you have to keep the horse wee-wee tank filled up and the fuel is more expensive (contains more energy per gallon, which almost nobody knows, but that’s a topic for another discussion). Salesmen sell people vehicles based upon 3% of their driving.

And there ya’ have it. Maybe a bigger factor than the transmission.

It’s the emissions equipment that makes them so complex, diesels pre-2005ish are arguably simpler than gas engines. But newer, clean burning diesels, especially ones with DEF are far more complex and less reliable as a result.

Truth be told, struck me as kind of a no brainier, but I didn't wanna come off opinionated where my experience is limited.

nope. it was ~1993-1994 when diesels caught up to gas engines in terms of complication. that’s when they moved to electronic engine management, electronic injection, and drive-by-wire. It was 2008 when the EPA finally said diesels don’t get a pass on being shit-spewing filth machines.

the 1tons have just gone nuts. given the dumb lifts in my neck of the woods, i doubt any of those are used for work.
